Jana Nayagan was slated for a big-screen release in January 2026. The state elections in Tamil Nadu were scheduled for April 2026. The film’s hero, Vijay, had already announced his entry into politics and was preparing to contest the assembly polls. He had already announced that Jana Nayagan would be his last film. So, did Director H. Vinoth have any other choice but to turn this into a huge campaign vehicle?

Once the makers boiled it down to that single-minded purpose, this story, screenplay, etc., have no relevance. On paper, the film is supposed to be a remake of the 2023 Telugu film Bhavanth Kesari. I haven’t watched that film, so I am not sure how Jana Nayagan fares compared to it or how much of Jana Nayagan is based on the Telugu film. This question becomes non-consequential when you watch the film, because there seems to be no semblance of a story. The screenplay seems to be inspired by many of Vijay’s earlier hits, like Theri, Master, Bigil, and whatnot.
With his early films like Sadhuranga Vettai, Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru, and Ner Paarvai, H. Vinoth was expected to be a filmmaker of great promise. But with his subsequent films like Valimai, Thunivu, and now Jana Nayagan, he seems to have fallen into the “Mass Hero trap,” just like many other directors in Tamil. With the sole purpose of pandering to the Mass Hero image of stars like Rajinikanth, Vijay, and Ajith, many promising filmmakers have lost their way.
As a film, Jana Nayagan is an embarrassment for Vijay. As a campaign element, it might have worked wonders. But it could not be released before the elections. Wonder what went wrong with the censors. What we see is a trimmed-down film that still has a lot of mindless violence. Even while watching on TV, my shirt got drenched in blood. If there is one scene with some bright lighting, do let me know.
Jana Nayagan is avoidable even on OTT. Watch it only to check if my review was wrong.
My Flash Verdict: Jana Nayagan is terrible from the word go.
The movie is doing well because of the fan base. No other reason.
